Description
Your order will include the following:
- Paramecium culture. Concentrated 150ml solution, containing thousands of live specimens.
- Culture setup and maintenace guide.
Paramecium are unicellular, ciliated protozoa found in freshwater, thriving in stagnant ponds and basins.
Their rapid reproduction and ease of cultivation make them an ideal first food for fish fry, especially the smallest species that require microscopic prey. Paramecia move using small hairs on their body named cilia and feed on bacteria, algae, and yeast. They multiply quickly through binary fission, ensuring a continuous food supply for young fish.
Paramecia small size and natural presence in aquatic ecosystems make them essential in early fish development. Due to their role in aquaculture, Paramecium are widely cultured by hobbyists and breeders to support healthy fry growth.
Paramecia range in size from 50 to 330 micrometers (0.0020 to 0.0130 inches) in length, making them microscopic but visible under a basic light microscope.
While individual Paramecia are too small to see with the naked eye, dense cultures may appear as a cloudy or milky suspension in water.
The video below was shoot in our lab using a microscope at 10x magnification.
