Rotifers are fascinating microscopic aquatic animals that belong to the phylum Rotifera.
Rotifers are very useful in aquarium environments, especially in breeding and maintaining healthy micro-ecosystems.
They can be used as Live Food for Fry (Baby Fish). Rotifers are small enough to be eaten by newly hatched fry of many fish species (like clownfish or bettas) that can’t eat larger food yet.
Rotifers have high nutritional Value. They are high in protein and easily digestible, especially when gut-loaded (fed with nutritious microalgae before being offered to fish).
Rotifers are also used as Coral and Invertebrate Feeding. In marine aquariums, especially reef tanks, rotifers are a favorite food for: Corals (especially filter-feeding types), Sea anemones, Feather dusters, Copepods and other microfauna that form the base of the reef food web
Rotifers also help improve the water quality and Ecosystem Balance. They consume Microalgae, Detritus, and Bacteria. This helps reduce excess nutrients and contributes to a stable micro-ecosystem, especially in planted or natural-style tanks.
Basic Rotifers Characteristics:
Size: Typically 0.1 to 0.5 mm long.
Habitat: Found in freshwater, brackish water, and sometimes marine environments. They live in ponds, lakes, rivers, moist soil, and even rain gutters.
Body Structure: They have a cylindrical or sac-like body, often divided into a head, trunk, and foot. Many have a corona, a crown of cilia on the head that looks like it’s spinning (hence the name “rotifer,” meaning “wheel-bearer”). This helps them swim and draw in food.
