Description
Foxtail Hornwort, scientifically known as Ceratophyllum demersum, is a species of aquatic plant commonly found in freshwater environments. It’s also known as coontail or hornwort.
Foxtail Hornwart is a fresh water free-floating plant, and does not have true roots anchoring it into the substrate, though it can anchor itself if needed. It thrives in a wide range of freshwater environments, from slow-moving rivers and ponds to lakes and reservoirs.
The plant can tolerate a variety of conditions, making it highly adaptable. It can survive in both nutrient-poor and nutrient-rich waters, as well as in low-light conditions. The plant has a characteristic “foxtail” appearance due to its dense, whorled leaves that grow around the stem in clusters. These leaves are thin, rigid, and divided into thread-like segments.
The stems can grow quite long, up to several meters, and the plant can form dense mats in the water. Ceratophyllum demersum plays a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems. It provides habitat and shelter for aquatic invertebrates, fish, and other organisms. It is often used in aquariums and ponds for water oxygenation and algae control, as it competes with algae for nutrients.
The plant also acts as a natural filter, helping to improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates. Beyond its ecological benefits, Foxtail Hornwort is popular in aquascaping and is often used in aquariums, water gardens, and koi ponds due to its ease of care and its ability to provide natural cover for fish.
Your order will include: 3 plant steams measuring approximately 5 to 10cm each.
