Description

Dry banana leaves contain tannins and humic acides which leach into the water. Tannins are what give blackwater rivers and streams their tea-colour like appearance and lowers the water pH levels. Banana leaves also provide anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties to the water which help support leaving fish and other animals or microorganisms (for example Daphnia) in the tank.

The leaves can be used as leaf litter sprinkled over top or shredded and mixed into the tank substrate.
