Description

Your order will include a pack containing 5 medium size live leeches.

Helobdella is a genus of leeches belonging to the Glossiphoniidae family, commonly known as freshwater jawless leeches. This genus is found globally, inhabiting various freshwater environments. Helobdella species are generally small and flat, and notably, they do not consume blood like many other leeches.

These leeches have garnered interest in scientific research, particularly in developmental biology, where several species serve as model organisms.

As researchers continue to explore the Helobdella genus, the use of molecular techniques becomes increasingly important to clarify species boundaries and enhance our understanding of their diversity. This genetic insight not only aids in taxonomy but also contributes to broader studies in ecology and evolution, revealing the intricate relationships within freshwater ecosystems. Helobdella leeches are fascinating organisms that play a significant role in both scientific research and their aquatic habitats.

Please note: The Helobdella austinensis leech consume freshwater snails. We recommend also getting a pack of ramshorn snails in addition, if you wish to keep the leech alive for extended periods of time.
